Low on cash? Don’t know how to date without a car? If you are a student coming from a larger city than the little town of Rexburg, Idaho, at first glance you might perceive there is nothing to do on a date at BYU-Idaho that won’t require a vehicle or at least twenty dollars. However, as you examine the options, you will discover an endless array of experiences just waiting to happen.

Money is often scarce as students put most of their efforts towards school. This results in fewer students with vehicles. Because of these obstacles, Brigham Young University-Idaho strives to cultivate an environment where dating is cheap and accessible. From concerts occurring as often as 4 times a week to sporting events, many activities are available and most of them are free for students. Some of these include formal and semi-formal dances, with a swing dance and country dance club every Wednesday night; student-run activities for new talent; and facilities available, including bowling, roller-skating, swimming, exercise and basketball gyms, and racquetball. They also provide recitals, exhibits, and once-a-month movie nights. In addition to all of this, BYU-Idaho rents out all the gear for snowboarding, hiking, skiing, rock climbing, snow hiking and kayaking (For more information visit http://activities.byui.edu).

Along with the many activities provided at BYU-Idaho there are also activities provided by the city of Rexburg and the surrounding areas. While some are within walking distance, others do require a vehicle, but can become group dates where cars are shared. Rexburg has five city parks, three of which are very large and are frequently used for Frisbee-golf, or for picnics throughout the summer months. Two of those parks are close to campus. Since Rexburg is a windy city, a date such as flying kites is also a popular choice. For the winter months, The Rex, a large facility two miles from campus, provides movies, bowling, pool tables, pizza, and arcades.

Rexburg does provide a few feature restaurants. Craigo’s an original pizza place, famous for its innovative pizza’s, sour dough bread, and their all-you-can-eat buffet, Big Jud’s, a burger joint famous for its 1 pound burger, and Teton Thai, an authentic Thailand cuisine, are all top date night choices.

West of Rexburg next to St. Anthony are the famed sand dunes, which provide a place for bonfires and sledding. The sand dunes are free and require only a little wood, or a rickety sled.

The Tetons, less than an hour from Rexburg, are some of the most famous mountains in the world and provide many trails and hikes as well as camp grounds. There is also a number of hot springs for swimming: Lava Hot Springs, Green Canyon, and Hicee.

In addition to what is offered in Rexburg, Idaho and on the college campus, many managers offer opportunities to meet and get to know the people within your apartment complexes. These can easily become facilitated date nights.

Don’t forget that included in all these activities is your ability to create fun and novel ideas as well.  Group dates with dinner and games are often a preferred choice for many single students in the winter. In the summer, sports such as Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Football, or Ultimate Frisbee are great date night activities. Whatever you decide to do, remember there are many activities available to get to know the opposite gender. With these endless, low-budget activities at walking distance, dating can be productive time focused on getting to know new individuals instead of wasting time looking under the couch for extra change.

Devilish Fun at Devil's Staircase

This was super fun!  If anyone loves to be with friends and discover the outdoors, this is the way to go.  My two friends and I planned a group hike to Devil's Staircase.  We also had the options of the Monument Hike or Table Rock and its two hikes-The Face or Huckleberry.  We made sure we had plenty of snacks, lunches, t.p., water, first aid, and, of course- transportation.  We invited my dad along to have just a little extra help along the way; he really can bring the outdoors to life for anyone.  It is recommended to bring a camera and an attitude of "This is fun" and "I can do this."

It starts out just as a cute little path that looks like it could be in a park, but then it turns into forest and switchbacks.  Keep your eyes open for horse turds and wildlife.  The view is perfect if one gets on the trail bright and early at about 6am.  The skies will be clear and gorgeous.  If you don’t give up, about ¾ of the way to the top there is this pond at the top—don't fall in; it's super muddy, and there is a huge boulder to climb that reaches out into the pond.  Make sure you explore.  The staircase gets a bit on the edgy side if you don't have very good balance and are afraid of heights.  But the view is well worth it.  Such accomplishment can be met at the top, and what a way to have it than making it with friends and family!

The way down—Wow!  Take a deep breath.  You will need it, because you will soon be walking just because your body is stuck in robot mode.  The idea of a real bathroom and a quick trip to square ice cream in Swan Valley is simply exhilarating.  Have Fun!!!
