The Graduate's Grind: Brigham Young University- Idaho

The Battle Against Boredom

Growing up, I always thought my town was small. It was a long time before our town of Marysville, Washington was even big enough to show up on a map. As we entered our high school years, especially, we often complained that Marysville was just a ghetto town with nothing to do. Now, being in Rexburg, a town that is less than half the population of my hometown, I hear the same complaint. Usually, I would accept that as fact.

While there are a few establishments in Rexburg for entertainment—movie theaters, bowling alleys, and now laser tag—it’s easy to become bored with these activities, or, since we are struggling through college and some of us don’t have any source of income, it can be hard to justify spending the money to see a movie or go out to eat. There are other ways to have fun even in a small town like Rexburg, some that don’t require any money at all. It’s all about a willingness to try something new and have fun doing it. A lot of the fun you have depends upon your attitude. Find a new hobby, or create your own little traditions, or get involved with activities on campus. If you’re having difficulty thinking of something to do, here are a couple of ideas.

Letterboxing: For this activity, you will need a notebook and a rubber stamp, which can be homemade or store bought, but the image should be something that represents you. Letterboxing is a scavenger hunt-like game in which you search for a hidden container, usually some sort of Tupperware, containing a homemade rubber stamp and a little notebook. You use the hidden stamp to put the homemade image in your notebook, and then leave your image in the notebook in the container. You can also write down your name and where you are from to make it more personal. One of these containers is even hidden near one of the BYU-Idaho signs on campus. For more information and the clues to where the containers are hidden, visit www.letterboxing.org.

Photo Shoots: There doesn’t need to be a special occasion to have your own photo shoots. One of the best parts about photo shoots is picking a theme and then dressing up, or finding the right scenery, or just being creative with the different types of pictures. Examples of themes include: superheroes, tea party, balloons, rock band, dollhouse, hobos, or the Roarin’ Twenties. This isn’t something that requires a lot of money. Make do with what you have or borrow things from friends. Better yet, get your friends involved in the photo shoot too. Be creative and have fun with it.

Other examples of things you can do are to make your own videos, go to the sand dunes or ice caves, have a camp fire, or hike “R” Mountain. Whatever you decide to do, do it with a spirit of fun and adventure, and bring friends along for the ride because chances are they are looking for something to do in Rexburg too.
