Students Speak Out: Recommended Classes

English 333: British Literature, Victorian/Modern
Emily Lloyd

I recommend British Literature as taught by Zan Cammack. For starters the classroom set up is different than the conventional rows of desks. We rearrange them every day to form a semi-circle and then proceed with our literary discussion for the day.  Sister Cammacks brings something new and exciting to class every single time. For example, when we were reading about riots during the novel North and South we were each given a piece of paper and told to write down an issue that lead to the riots. We then crumpled the paper and were given permission to throw them at her, thereby recreating a scene from the novel. We then discussed how each of those issues fit into the novel. And we were just assigned to read Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own. It was pretty deep, so in order to help us understand it we split up into six groups. Each group was assigned a chapter and was required to illustrate a comic strip explaining what was happening in the chapter. Sister Cammack knows how to keep our attention. We’re college age, but still kids at heart in her class.

ELED 280: Motivation and Management
Jennika Snider

I highly recommend that every education major take the Motivation and Management class. I am a secondary education major and am not required to take this class. I heard through the grapevine it was a good class so I took it and it changed the way I look at teaching. Before I took the class I was terrified of students turning mutinous on me in the classroom. Now I don’t need to be afraid in the classroom because I am prepared. In the class we learned what we should do in case of any number of emergencies. Also because of this class I am aware of which education philosophies I will use in my classroom, how I will run my classroom, how my personality will effect my classroom, and we even put together a portfolio to bring to an interview to help us get the upper hand.
