College is stressful. And the best way to relieve that stress is in extra-curricular activities. At BYU-Idaho there’s a never-ending list of things for students to do.  From outdoor recreation to events showcasing student talent, there’s something for everyone.

A few of the more popular activities at BYU-Idaho are Guitars Unplugged, Country and Swing dancing, bouldering, Abs that Rock classes, ultimate Frisbee, and Helping Hands service projects held throughout each semester.  All students are encouraged to participate in any and all of the activities that interest them.

But the biggest difference between the activities at BYU-I and ones at any other school is that they’re all planned, organized, and executed by students, just like you!

If you haven’t heard about it already, the Learning Model is a HUGE part of this institution. It encourages students to be the teachers and leaders, because everyone brings something unique to the table, and the Activities program is no exception.

Some of the positions within the Activities program require more time than others, and some require specific skills, but any student enrolled at BYU-I is allowed (and encouraged) to apply for a position! The positions available include Volunteer, Manager, Coordinator, Student Director, and Student Area Director.  All of these positions are available in each area of the Activities program, including working as a coach or assistant coach for any sports team.

Student volunteers can work on a project throughout the semester, or just for a few hours. It all depends on what you want to do and how involved you want to be.  If you’re looking for a little more responsibility and a leadership opportunity, you might want to look into a position as a manager. Managers plan events and activities, working closely with a team of volunteers to ensure that everything will run smoothly.  Managers also work closely with their respective Coordinator to ensure that every event planned is scheduled at the best possible time, so that as many students that want to participate can.  Student Directors and Area Directors work mostly in the administrative area of the Activities program, working together with both Coordinators and the faculty to plan and carry through fun and exciting activities, sports events, and projects.

Or, maybe you want to be further behind the scenes, organizing the events and making it easier for those in charge of the actual planning.  Student coordinators take responsibility for providing information about available resources to the managers.

Any one of these positions can be a rewarding experience. Whether you’re watching others enjoy an activity that you helped to create, or even just attending an event with some friends, the Activities program at BYU-Idaho is the perfect place to be when you need that extra boost of excitement after a long, stressful week of school!
